How to Care for Your Jewellery: Simple Everyday Tips

A little everyday care helps keep your favourite jewellery looking its best. Start with any care instructions supplied with your piece, as metals, finishes and gemstones need different treatment.

Put jewellery on last

Apply perfume, cosmetics and lotions before putting on your jewellery. Let them dry first, and remove your pieces before swimming, exercising or using household cleaning products.

Store pieces separately

Keep necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings in separate soft pouches or compartments to reduce rubbing and tangling. Fasten necklace chains before storing them and keep your jewellery somewhere dry.

Keep cleaning gentle

A soft, non-abrasive cloth is a sensible starting point for many pieces. Avoid soaking jewellery or using chemical cleaners unless the maker's instructions say they are suitable. Plated finishes, pearls and delicate gemstones can require special care.

Check before you wear

Look at clasps, chains and stone settings regularly. If something feels loose or damaged, stop wearing the piece and ask a jeweller to inspect it.
